Christy's Hamburgers in Winchester has closed (STLToday)

Christy's Hamburgers at 14560 Manchester Road in Winchester has closed. A poster in the Eat at Joe's forum tipped us off to the news yesterday:
It looks like Christy's in Winchester has closed, no lights on, no one inside at 1:00 this afternoon.
The restaurant's phone number has been disconnected.
The Christy's in Winchester was the second area location for the small, Starkville, Mississippi-based chain. The Christy's at 3957 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville remains open. A call there this morning confirms the closure of the Manchester Road location.

Another new microbrewery, Templar, coming to Alton

Sales could begin as soon as Oct. 1 -- although its owner says more like Thanksgiving -- for beers from Templar Brewing, a new microbrewery coming to Alton.

The Alton City Council approved a special use permit this week for Templar owner Richard Blevens to operate a microbrewery on the premises of Mac's Time Out at 331 Belle Street. Unlike a "brewpub" situation, however, Templar will only be distributed wholesale. Plans are to brew up to 1,200 barrels annually.

Blevens works at the Phillips 66 refinery in Wood River. He's been home brewing for several years.

Crown Candy Kitchen marks 100 years of delighting St. Louisans

In a back room at Crown Candy Kitchen, Andy Karandzieff pours milk chocolate into Easter bunny molds. His mother, Bessie, works a few feet away, filling heart-shaped boxes with Crown’s homemade chocolates.

Andy’s wife, Sherri, pops in from her office, where she’s processing online orders. His brother, Tom, is in Crown’s minuscule kitchen, crisping bacon for the lunch rush. Their sister-in-law, Nancy, pores over spreadsheets that keep this family-run candy cartel organized.

The Best Lunch Spots of 'The Lou': BARcelona Tapas

BARcelona Tapas

Copied from Website
We pride ourselves in creating a traditional authentic Tapas Bar atmosphere. This includes our warm decor and the traditional hanging of Serrano hams and dried bacalaos. Our service reflects a traditional tapas experience as you might find in Madrid, Barcelona or Sevilla.

Tapas style service means that food is prepared to order and delivered to the table plates at a time. We do not intend on delivering all the food in traditional course style, or the entire table at once. This way you will be able to enjoy an authentic tapas evening that encourages sharing of plates, lots of gossip and sangria.

Livin' Life in 'The Lou' Recommends:
Tortilla Española – Potato and onion omelette cake with spinach.

Bacalao – Crispy codfish and potato cakes with lemon garlic alioli.

Alcachofas Fritas – Crispy artichokes with Romesco sauce and shaved Manchego cheese.

Atún con Pimienta – Pepper encrusted tuna with Rioja sauce.

Queso de Cabra al Horno – Baked goat cheese in tomato sauce with garlic bread

Croquetas de Pollo y Jamón – Chicken and Serrano ham croquettes, cumin alioli.

Albóndigas – Spanish meatballs in tomato sauce with Manchego cheese.

Solomillo con Cabrales – Grilled beef tenderloin with blue cheese, spinach and a Rioja reduction sauce.

Tres Leches – Spanish three milk cake topped with cream and caramel.

Capirote – Our own warm bread pudding with caramel sauce.

BARcelona is one of our favorite restaurants. It's a great place to bring a small group, order a bunch of tapas and everyone share... And don't forget to order the Sangria.

Tip: Solomillo con Cabrales - if you don't like blue cheese, substitute the horseradish cream but keep everything else the same - TO DIE FOR!!!

The Best Lunch Spots of 'The Lou': Pappy's Smokehouse

From Metrotix
Full Article

Pappy's lunch special - $7

When is lunch worth waiting in a huge line and leaving the place smelling like smoked meat? When it's Pappy's lunch special from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. What makes this lunch special so, well, special? The portion size. The sandwich is huge! For just $7, including tax, you can have your choice of a barbecued pulled pork or chicken sandwich, choice of side and a fountain drink. And what's more, there's enough to take some home for another sandwich. The pulled pork (or chicken) comes "dry" on a fresh, oversized bun waiting for you to slather your favorite sauce all over it. And if you're a true connoiseur, you'll have it with no sauce at all. Sides range from sweet potato fries, fried corn, baked beans, and potato salad.

Lunchtime tip: Leave the office early to allow for 'line' time during peak lunch hour.

Southtown Pub is a meat lover's dream

Southtown Pub is a Bar with a capital “B.”

Sure, it’s pleasingly nonsmoking with good service. But there are also the requisite “girls gone wild” throwing down dollar shots and music so loud that our conversations consisted solely of the word “huh?”

So why go, you ask?

Because Southtown Pub is also a Restaurant with a capital “R.”

Specializing in barbecue, Southtown Pub is suffused with a scent so meaty that you’ll want to eat the air — and afterward, your aromatic clothes.

Little Hills Winery

That classic breakfast staple, Riesling, just happens to be nearly perfect with a ham steak—and it just happens to be a specialty at this beautiful winery in historic St. Charles. The ham, along with eggs, fried potatoes, and toast or an omelet stuffed with Brie, bacon, and apple-onion marmalade, provides substantial sustenance for exploring Main Street. Opt for the patio if weather permits; inside, it’s charmingly rustic. And while lunch and dinner are often crowded, breakfast here is slow-paced and thoroughly enjoyable.

The Scottish Arms

For some, wrestling oneself from morning-after slumber merely to consume a meal is blasphemy; for others, Sunday brunch is a gustatory high holy day. We suggest a compromise: Indulge in The Highland Hangover (complete with Scotch eggs and bridies) or the Seamus MacBenedict (did he just walk by in a kilt?) at The Scottish Arms. Then embrace the dog that bit ye with a trip to the Arms’ bloody Mary bar, graced with more pickled veggies than Aunt Ailsa puts out at Hogmanay.

Jilly's Cupcake Bar & Café

Sure, you know the giant cupcakes—it’s what Jilly’s is all about. Except on Sunday mornings, when this cupcake bar becomes all about executive chef Dana Holland’s brunch fare. Holland puts out a helluva spread, served buffet-style, a gamut going from house-made pâtés and smoky lox to bananas-Foster French toast and stuffed egg stratas to six-cheese mac ’n’ cheese and even shrimp and grits. (Fair warning: Hot-pink walls, fluorescent lighting, and popularity with families means Jilly’s might be a bit rough on anyone who had a rousing Saturday night.)
