Edward Mujica emerged from the bullpen as the Cardinals’ closer for the first time in a Busch Stadium appearance on Tuesday night, and all that stood between him and his fifth save was the heart of the Cincinnati batting order.
Manager Mike Matheny could have stuck with lefthanded starter Jaime Garcia with lefties Joey Votto and Jay Bruce coming to the plate. He could have opted for lefthanded reliever Randy Choate, who had warmed up.
But he went with Mujica, who rewarded the decision by striking out the side – Votto, Brandon Phillips and Bruce – to preserve the 2-1 win.
