PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. • The Cardinals scored 10 runs
or more for the third game in succession today, pummeling the New York
Mets 12-4. But the bigger story may have been the pitching of young
righthander Michael Wacha.
The 6-foot-6 Wacha, the club’s top
draft pick last year, struck out three and allowed just one hit over two
innings in his spring training debut last Saturday. He was even better
today, striking out five and giving up one hit over three innings. His
totals for the spring are five innings pitched, two hits allowed, eight
strikeouts, no walks.
“That guy can pitch in the big leagues right now,” said five-time Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina.
