Scouting report • The Cardinals' ace will make his first postseason appearance since a victory in Game 7 of the World Series last year. He's won four consecutive playoff decisions, and the righty has not allowed more than three earned runs in five consecutive starts and in 12 of his 15 career playoff starts. ... In three starts since coming back from surgery, including two against 100-loss teams, Carpenter has gained strength and sharpness. His sinker jumped from averaging 89.4 mph in his first start to 91.3 mph in his third start; his trusty cutter went from 85.0 mph to 87.0 mph.
