Another new microbrewery, Templar, coming to Alton

Sales could begin as soon as Oct. 1 -- although its owner says more like Thanksgiving -- for beers from Templar Brewing, a new microbrewery coming to Alton.

The Alton City Council approved a special use permit this week for Templar owner Richard Blevens to operate a microbrewery on the premises of Mac's Time Out at 331 Belle Street. Unlike a "brewpub" situation, however, Templar will only be distributed wholesale. Plans are to brew up to 1,200 barrels annually.

Blevens works at the Phillips 66 refinery in Wood River. He's been home brewing for several years.
