Improbable 24-24 tie leaves Rams wondering what might have been

SAN FRANCISCO • Under any circumstances, coming out of San Francisco without a loss against the mighty 49ers would be cause for universal joy and celebration. Except for these circumstances.

There were no smiles, no laughter, no shouts of glee in the visitors’ locker room at Candlestick Park. Not after a 24-24 overtime tie in which the Rams had several chances to register one of the biggest upsets in the NFL this season.

Not after seeing 142 yards wiped off Danny Amendola’s ledger on a pair of questionable penalties — one for an illegal block in the back (on Justin Cole) that wiped out a 62-yard punt return to the San Francisco 2 in the third quarter. And the one for an illegal formation, wiping out an 80-yard reception by Amendola on the first play of overtime.
