Bernie: NHL pushes fans too far again

Based on media reports over the weekend, it appears that labor discussions between the NHL and the players’ union are heating up. Talks resumed Saturday, and that’s a start.

Still, I wonder if the league has already alienated the fans. How much abuse will hockey fans accept before they find other uses for their money?

This is the third lockout and stoppage under Commissioner Gary Bettman. After Bettman and the owners canceled the entire 2004-2005 season, the fans returned and the league enjoyed an increase in popularity. The NHL became the only North American professional sports league to wipe out an entire season in a labor dispute, but Bettman and his bosses got away with it, and that emboldened them to lock the doors again.
