Thrust into a high-profile role during the highest-stakes time of year, rookie shortstop Pete Kozma has been at the nexus of the two defining defensive plays during these playoffs for the Cardinals.

His teammates don’t expect either to linger or inhibit what he can yet do.

For proof, they point to what he’s done.

"He’s helped us get here," third baseman David Freese said, "as everybody knows."

Kozma committed a fielding error in the eighth inning Sunday that led to the decisive rally for Washington in its 3-2 victory at Busch Stadium. Kozma attempted to backhand a sharp grounder and couldn’t pick it cleanly. That play came two days after his role in the notorious infield fly rule that roiled Atlanta.

The error Sunday, the infield-fly kerfuffle, and a double play not turned in Atlanta have been Kozma’s baptism into postseason baseball less than three weeks after he took over the everyday job at shortstop.
